As part of the Travis Perkins Group, BSS is committed to leading sustainability efforts in construction and addressing critical environmental challenges. Below are the highlights of their initiatives:
Net Zero Carbon Commitment
BSS is dedicated to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting the decarbonisation of the built environment. The Group has committed to:
- Reducing Scope 1 and 2 Carbon Emissions: Aiming for an 80% reduction by 2035, with a 33% reduction already achieved since 2020.
- Decarbonising the Fleet: Using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) in 270 vehicles, saving 1.4 million litres of diesel and 3,500 tonnes of CO2 in 2023.
- Decarbonising the Estate: Conducting pilot projects to implement renewable energy systems like solar panels, heat pumps, and LED lighting for long-term carbon reduction.
The Group acknowledges that 99% of its carbon footprint lies in the supply chain. To lead by example and maintain integrity, BSS is prioritizing reductions in direct emissions while encouraging suppliers and customers to decarbonise.
Sustainable Waste Management
BSS plays a significant role in reducing waste across its operations and supply chain:
- Diverting Waste from Landfill: Over 96% of the Group’s waste was diverted from landfill in 2023, with ongoing efforts to improve this further through partnerships with Veolia.
- Recycling Initiatives: Materials such as cardboard, plastic wrap, paper, and wood are processed and recycled through a backhaul operation at distribution centres.
- Reusing Materials: Pallets, collars, and lids are returned and reused, reducing waste generation.
Packaging Optimisation
BSS is committed to sustainable packaging solutions:
- Reduced plastic packaging by replacing foam door corners with cardboard and switching to lighter grip films.
- Educating suppliers about Extended Producer Responsibilities (EPR) regulations to optimise packaging and reduce waste.
At GOS Heating, we are proud to collaborate with BSS, whose dedication to sustainability aligns with our own environmental goals, ensuring a greener and more sustainable future.
